5F FARMING – CONFERENCE 2023

BACKGROUND

ATPBR has conducted three national conferences under its 5F Farming (Food, Feed, Fiber, Fuel & Fine chemicals) initiative on themes related to crop improvement since 2019 (1. Crop Improvement for 21st Century, 2. Gene Revolution for Profitable Agriculture and 3. Realigning Indian Agriculture for a Sustainable Future). While deliberating on the appropriate theme for the next conference, members of the organizing committee agreed that Indian agricultural scientists received worldwide recognition for the great strides they made in making the green revolution happen and achieving continued phenomenal successes thereafter. Indian R&D made all-round advancements in the fields of crop improvement, including genetics, breeding, and biotechnology; soil and water management; protection of crops from biotic and abiotic stresses; seed science and technology; farm mechanization and protected agriculture; post-harvest handing of crops; e-commerce, etc. In particular regard to crop improvement and introduction of seeds of new varieties, India’s development initiatives got closely connected with international research since the adoption of “New Seed Policy” in 1988. That phase was followed by the development of biotech crops in late nineties which culminated into the commercial introduction of Bt cotton in 2002. These developments provided major impetus to increasing investment in research by both public and private sector, leading to greater number of new, superior varieties and hybrids in both field and vegetable crops becoming available to the farmers. Overall, India’s breeding activities assumed a formidable size comparable to any in the world. India’s agricultural exports, including those of seeds also achieved significant growth. Yet, as the members of the organizing committee of the 4th 5F Conference arrived at a consensus, India’s actual performance in the global seed market falls short of its much greater potential, considering the nation’s genetic and agro-climatic diversity on the one hand, and the availability of plenty of talented and qualified research personnel, on the other. Therefore, the committee was unanimous that the central theme of the next expert consultation would be to find ways to harness India’s potential and turning it into one of the leading providers of superior performing crop varieties in the world market. It is proposed that the experts shall, a)delve upon both strengths and weaknesses of the state of Indian crop improvement research and the factors that govern the realization of its potential, vis-á-vis the forces that determine the end products finding place in the global market, and b) strive to find out ways that may enable India to become a major player in the global seed market – with varieties bred in India being grown by farmers in other countries.

The conference on Globalization of India’s Crop Improvement Research shall deliberate on the following sub-themes, through keynote addresses, as well as panel discussions:

  • Comprehensive integration of cutting-edge science and precision technology to achieve sustainability within and exploit full potential of agriculture beyond our borders
  • Improvement of individual and industrial agility through effective skill development program to meet current and future challenges in this emerging area
  • Inclusion of young and capable or competent professionals to build a resilient ecosystem for sustainable primary and secondary agriculture ecosystem within the country and abroad

The conference will provide a perfect platform for Scientists, Industry Leaders, Policymakers, Farmers, Students and other stakeholders for brainstorming, networking and to learn from each other for a better tomorrow.

ATPBR Awards

The Foundation for Advanced Training in Plant Breeding (ATPBR) is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization, whose goal is to strengthen plant breeding research-for-development (R4D) capacity in India. ATPBR aims to create a conducive ecosystem by bringing together knowledge and skill-based organizations and experts on a common platform and facilitate interventions for organizing joint capacity-building courses, joint research projects and co-incubation practices to promote technology entrepreneurs and global research leaders to support a viable seed industry.

ATPBR aims to:
  1. Be a platform to facilitate and catalyze public and private partnerships in the seed industry
  2. Sensitize people to appreciate and value the importance of plant breeding research for a vibrant seed industry
  3. Promote global partnerships in the seed industry through capacity building via research-for-development
  4. Nurture young plant breeders through upgradation in use of cutting-edge technologies, via a global network of experienced scientists
  5. Aspire to be the leading plant breeding research, and capacity building center

Considering that plant breeders rarely get recognized (as their main contributions are improved varieties and hybrids, compared to high impact research papers or technologies or patents of scientists in other disciplines), Starting from 2020 onwards, ATPBR has instituted ATPBR Achievement Awards in the Seed Industry to deserving plant breeders and seed technologists who have made significant contributions to the seed industry.

Awards are under the following three categories:
  1. Lifetime Achievement Award in Plant Breeding
  2. Outstanding Women Achievers in Seed Industry Award
  3. Excellence in Seed Industry Award (both Individuals or Institutions)

ATPBR is inviting nominations of possible candidates for the 2023 Awards from Institutions/ Seed Companies. Nominations could also come from Seed Associations or such other entities. Nominations could also come from Seed Associations or such other entities. Each nomination should carry support/ recommendations from two other entities (institutions/ companies).

Please note that nominations from individuals will not be entertained.

The following general criteria needs to be considered during selecting individuals for nominations:
  • Candidates should have at least 2 decades of experience in developing and releasing improved crop varieties/ hybrids or worked in the seed industry.
  • Basic criteria for categories 1 and 2 to include number of varieties/ hybrids developed, Spread/ Popularity of varieties, measured in terms of area covered/ Seed sales/ Market share/ Quality parameters/ Farmer adoption and Impact on farmer’s field.
  • Criteria also include number research papers, new innovations, improved methods/ technologies, IPRs, patents, PVP/ germplasm registrations, etc.
  • Criteria for Category 3 (Excellence in Seed Industry) includes people/ companies who are unsung heroes/ Companies for a long period (minimum 20 years), who have used innovative approaches/ technologies, and shown vision and leadership in the seed industry.
  • Last date to submit the nomination: September 30, 2022
