Global Advances in Okra Genetics and Breeding
BACKGROUND
Okra as a crop has witnessed significant growth in the last decade with India garnering 70 percent of the global share followed by Nigeria at 15 percent. Recognizing the importance of the crop, the first Global Okra Round Table (GORT) meeting was held in India under the aegis of ATPBR (Advanced Training in Plant Breeding Research) with the support of ICAR-IARI, New Delhi, India on Oct 10-12, 2022. The conference was attended by more than 250 professionals. One of the decisions in the plenary session on Oct 12, 2022 was to make GORT as a biennial event and by consensus of participants it was decided to host GORT 2 in Nigeria recognising its prominence as a second most producer of okra globally. NIHORT, Ibadan, Nigeria, has agreed to co-host the event and provide all local support for this important meeting planned from October 2 to 4, 2024.
The Conference aim to facilitate discussion on Okra improvement status. With Nigeria being the second largest producer of okra globally, this makes it an ideal host for round two conference on okra improvement. Discussions can revolve around best practices, research findings, and innovations in okra cultivation, and also addressing breeding, genomics, agronomy, IPM, nutritional quality, socioeconomic aspects and agribusinesses in not only Nigeria but whole of Africa and rest of the world.
5F Farming Conference - Breeding for Resilience
Africa's diverse agro-ecological zones present unique challenges and opportunities for agriculture. With agriculture being a crucial driver of the African economy, the conference aims to address the need to focus on the latest advances in breeding for resilience tailored to Africa's varied conditions. Hence, it has also been decided to have a one-day conference on “Breeding for Resilience” hosted at IITA-Nigeria on October 4, 2024 to allow deliberations on key advances and future needs in abiotic and biotic stress tolerance in key crops of importance with a particular focus on tropics and sub-tropics. It is proposed to invite keynote speakers for various sessions of these two conferences and invite papers from all interested researchers for oral and poster presentations to allow latest efforts on crops of economic importance for resilient breeding, especially using new breeding tools (NBT’s). Need of resilient breeding is of top importance in Africa to ensure food security and sustainability.
Additionally, the conference will provide a platform for international collaboration, bringing together experts, researchers, and policymakers to exchange knowledge and form partnerships for the advancement of sustainable agriculture in Africa and beyond. A conference could facilitate discussions on policies, innovations, and investments needed to enhance the productivity and sustainability of agriculture across the continent. The conference can explore ways to enhance the agricultural value chain, create job opportunities, and contribute to economic growth in the region.
In conclusion, this conference aims to facilitate the discussion on advancements in Okra breeding by inviting researchers and experts to share their latest insights and efforts. Additionally, the conference will focus on resilient breeding tailored to Africa's diverse agro-ecological zones, addressing key challenges and opportunities in agriculture.
